Pregnancy belt sizing instructions – helping you choose the correct size support belt
In this video we are going to look at how to size yourself for a pregnancy belt. It’s important that you check the sizing instructions for the particular brand that you’re going to buy. However, in general, there are two guidelines, the first is that you measure around your hips, and the second is that you measure between your waist and your hips under your belly.
If you are required to measure around your hips, find a measuring tape. Alternatively, grab some string that you can then measure with a ruler. Measure around the circumference of your hips. Choose the pregnancy belt size that corresponds with your measurement.
If you are instructed to measure between your waist and hips, under your belly. Imagine you are wearing the support belt and then find the line that would run straight through the middle of it, so that you are measuring between your waist and hips and then down under your belly.
When it comes to support belts, its generally best to choose the exact size that matches your measurement. If you’re borderline we don’t usually recommend that you go to the larger size. The only time the larger size may be the most suitable option is if you are very early on in your pregnancy, or have had above average weight gain (particularly around your hips). You generally don’t expand that much around your hips, the expansion will happen more around your belly.
It’s important that your pregnancy belt is firm and supportive otherwise there’s no point in wearing one. A maternity support belt shouldn’t be too tight or restrictive.
