Pushing in labour is a skill that must be learned during pregnancy; you cannot learn a new skill when your in pain. In order to push effectively, you need to do three things.

1. Strengthen your abdominals for labour

The first thing you need to do is to strengthen your abdominal muscles using the Tupler Technique exercises so that your abdominals are strong enough to push for as long as they need to push during labour.

2. Practice Pushing for labour

The second thing you need to do is practice pushing. For instance, if you practice using your abdominals every time you have a bowel movement, then when you get to labour, it will be second nature – the goal being, to push with your strengthened abdominals, and relax your pelvic floor muscles which you’ve stretched and strengthened during the pregnancy.

3. Splint your abdominal muscles during labour

The third thing is splinting your muscles during labour. This is important, because during pregnancy, the muscles separate. When they separate, the connective tissue joining them, stretches sideways. So what happens is, the uterus is now being supported by a thin piece of connective tissue, instead of the muscles if they were together. This causes the uterus to get a little top heavy from the growing baby, so when the muscles separate, the top of the uterus tilts forward. This causes the cervix to go out of alignment with the vaginal cannal. When you use a splint and hold the two halves of the muscle together, then it puts the uterus in a much better position, making it much easier to push your baby out.
