14 Hearty Main Meals from 1 Shopping List

Our 2 Week Meal Diary provides you with 14 Hearty Main Meal recipes from the 1 shopping list below. Each main meal will provide 5 average sized serves. The idea of the below list is to ensure you have every single ingredient you would need to cook our 14 meals, which is great if you are going away, or starting your pantry afresh. In most cases, you are likely to have some of the ingredients already (ie. Salt, Oil, Flour), so you may not need to purchase them.

meal challengeI purchased the ingredients on this list from Coles, and a local butcher. The total cost was $253.40, which works out at approximately $3.62 per serve. I had a mix of supermarket and brand name products, did not buy anything that was on special, did not purchase only the cheapest cuts of meat, and live in Tasmania (which usually means prices are marginally higher). So you can see that there is plenty of opportunity to reduce your total cost!

If you were to purchase ONLY brand name ingredients, the total cost would be closer to $288.84 or $4.12 per serve.

Pantry ingredients

  • 1kg Rice (I use Basmati)
  • Massel Chicken Stock Powder (I buy Massel because it doesn’t have any nasty additives)
  • Massel Beef Stock Powder
  • 500g jar Honey
  • Cornflour
  • 1kg Plain Flour
  • 1kg Self Raising Flour
  • 500g packet Brown Sugar
  • White Vinegar
  • 500ml Tomato Sauce
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Soy Sauce
  • Salt
  • Can Diced Tomatoes
  • Can Condensed Tomato Soup
  • 400g of Mayonnaise
  • Approx 375g jar Tomato Paste
  • 425g Tin Tuna
  • 425g Tin Salmon
  • 500g packet Fettuccine
  • 500g packet Spaghetti
  • 500g packet macaroni
  • 500g packet pasta spirals
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • 500ml Olive Oil

Fridge/Freezer

  • Puff Pastry 
  • 1kg Frozen Corn Kernels
  • 1kg Frozen Peas
  • 300g Sour Cream
  • 500g block of butter
  • 2 Lt Milk
  • 1 Dozen Eggs
  • 600ml Cream
  • 1kg Block Cheese

Fresh

  • 10kg Bag Potatoes (will use approx 6-7 kg’s, but buying a 10kg bag works out much cheaper)
  • 2kg Carrots
  • 2kg bag Onions
  • 2 medium Zucchini
  • 900g Green Beans
  • 700g – 800g Mushrooms
  • 4 x Tomatoes
  • Lettuce (variety depends on your particular preferences)
  • Garlic
  • Half bunch Celery
  • 1 x Cucumber
  • 3 x Lemons
  • 2 x Granny Smith Apples

Meat

  • 1 x Marinated Whole Chicken
  • 1 x Plain Whole Chicken
  • 2kg Mince
  • 6 x Chicken Thigh Fillets
  • 6 c Chicken Breast Fillets
  • 600g Beef Sausages
  • 2kg Blade Roast (or similar)
  • 2kg Blade or Stewing Steak
